MBTA Accident Leaves Man Dead Overnight

Overnight at approximately 02:00 hours Boston Fire and Boston EMS and Transit Police responded to the Downtown Crossing MBTA station for a technical rescue for an entrapment. Early reports were a man was trapped in the pit at the station.

When crews arrived they located a adult male who was on the tracks, specifically the third rail. The third rail, also known as a live rail or electric rail, is the power source for the subway, running a current of over 600 volts.

Power was cut to the system and rescue crews were able to climb down to the victim. Unfortunately, the man was discovered to be deceased with Boston EMTs declaring him non-viable on scene. He was not transported.

At this time the manner of how the man ended up on the tracks is unknown. The MBTA Transit Police are currently investigating the incident. At this time no further information is available. We will update if possible with any developments.
