At about 1:55 AM on Thursday, December 31, 2020, officers assigned to the District C-6 (South Boston) Anti-Crime Unit made two arrests and recovered a loaded firearm in the area of Norfolk Avenue and Shirley Street, Roxbury, slightly over the B-2 line.
While on patrol, officers conducted a query of a motor vehicle which led to the discovery that the owner of the vehicle had a suspended license as well as a failed inspection sticker. Officers initiated a traffic stop of the vehicle in the area of 197 Norfolk Avenue.
As the officers approached, they observed large plumes of smoke pouring out of the driver and passenger windows and the smell of burnt marijuana emitting from the vehicle. Officers identified the operator, who was driving with a suspended license as well as the passenger, who was merely in possession of an identification card.
With neither party being legally licensed to operate the vehicle, both were removed. During an inventory of the vehicle prior to towing, officers noticed the rear passenger light on the ceiling of the vehicle was out of place, appearing to have been manipulated.
Behind the light, officers recovered a black Glock 43 9mm firearm loaded with seven rounds of live ammunition. Due to the proximity of both the driver and the passenger, officers arrested both of the males.
Officers arrested the operator, Darwin Jones, 42-years-old, of Mattapan, and the passenger, Andre Givens Jr., 32-years-old, of Mattapan. Both are expected to be arraigned in Roxbury District Court on charges of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License, Carrying a Firearm without a License, and Unlawful Possession of Ammunition. Jones faces an additional charge of Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle.
