At approximately 22:00 hours, Boston Fire struck Box 3547, Norfolk Street and Evelyn Street for number 34 Fessenden Street in Mattapan after receiving calls for a small explosion and fire in the rear of the building. Quickly after arriving, a second alarm was ordered with companies battling the fire which had extended upward. A close call, when a member fell through the back porch promoted command to order all firefighters off the rear porches. Lucky the member was okay, with him quickly returning to the fight.
After a while, the heavy bulk of the fire was knocked down with everyone safely evacuated from the building with companies continuing the extensive overhaul. Between the deep snow and high fences around the property initial access was difficult but firefighters made quick work of it.
A total of seven people were displaces in the blaze including two children, however no injuries were reported. Massachusetts Red Cross as well as Boston EMS were on scene to assist the family on the cold and snowy night. Total damages are estimated at over $250,000 with Boston FIU continuing to investigate the cause. Detail companies remained on scene late into the evening monitoring hotspots and assuring that the fire would not spark up again.
