Firearm Recovered After Eagle-Eye BWH Security Guard Spots Psych Patient With Gun

Sunday evening, shortly after 19:00 hours, Boston Police Officers of District B-2 responded to the Emergency Department of Brigham and Women’s Hospital for reports of a person with a gun.

Security officers had noticed the imprint of the firearm in a backpack that a patient was clutching after EMS had brought the suspect in for mental health concerns. BWH security attempted to intervene while waiting for police, inciting a brief struggle between the suspect and security guards; however, they were eventually able to gain control of the firearm as well as the suspect.

Police arrived and secured the scene, taking custody of the suspect, a male in his 30s, and calling in detectives to process what turned out to be an illegal .380 caliber Smith & Wesson.

The suspect is scheduled to appear at Roxbury Court on charges of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, and Carrying a Loaded Firearm. Boston Police refused to further identify the suspect, citing mental health privacy restrictions.
