Over 200 rounds fired overnight as Understaffed and overworked Boston Police Attempt to Keep Up

Overnight, Boston Police were pushed to their wits end with what seemed to be nonstop shooting across the Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan areas. There were nearly 30 ShotSpotter Activations, 911 calls, and on-sighted incidents citywide overnight. At one point, Boston Police Officers from Districts B-2 and B-3 couldn’t handle the volume alone. The decision was made to activate EDTs, additional units from outside districts to help with calls. Although Boston Police were unable to confirm the details, our records indicate easily over 200 rounds fired with a total of four people shot, over ten cars damaged, and over five homes hit. Here is the latest breakdown of the major shots fired incidents overnight.

Incident One:

At approximately 20:40 hours, Boston Police Officers from C-11 began receiving 911 calls for shots fired in the area of 671 Washington Street in Dorchester. They did get a ShotSpotter activation for 5 rounds. The 911 caller reported hearing at least 6 rounds and saw the shooters flee on foot. Officers canvased the area but could not find any shell casings. Incident is still under investigation.


Incident TWO:

At approximately 21:40 hours, Boston Police Officers from B-3 began to hear shots and were quickly directed to the area of Ormond Street by numerous ShotSpotter activations totaling over 23 rounds. On scene a man was found shot in his car. Over 40 spent shell casings were located at the scene. This incident is still under investigation. More info can be found here.


Incident Three

At approximately 22:15 hours, Boston Police Officers from C-11 began receiving 911 calls for shots fired in the area of Ditson Street and Charles Street in Dorchester. There was no Spotter activation. The 911 caller reported hearing 1-3 rounds, this incident is still under investigation.


Incident Four:

At approximately 22:20 hours, Boston Police Officers from District B-3 responded to a ShotSpotter activation in the area of 926 Morton Street in Mattapan for a total of 4 rounds. Witnesses said they could hear the shots but did not see anything. No victims or ballistics were located. This incident is still under investigation.


Incident FIve:

At approximately 22:45 hours, Boston Police Officers from District B-2 responded to multiple 911 calls for shots fired in the area of 85 Regent Street in Roxbury. The 911 callers reported hearing approximately 5 rounds. Witnesses said they could hear the shots but did not see anything. No victims or ballistics were located. This incident is still under investigation.


Incident Six:

At approximately 00:12 hours, Boston Police Officers from B-3 responded to a ShotSpotter activation for 5 rounds in the area of 59 Evans Street in Dorchester. Incident is still under investigation.


Incident Seven:

At approximately 00:15 hours, Boston Police Officers from B-2 and B-3 responded to 120 Glenway Street after a ShotSpotter activation totaled over 23 rounds. On scene two men were found shot. Incident Eight:

At approximately 00:20 hours Boston Police Officers from District B-2 respond to the area of Humboldt Ave, Walnut Ave and Laurel Street for a ShotSpotter Activation. Although ShotSpotter only reported 12 rounds fired, officers found closer to 40 on scene. In addition, numerous vehicles were struck with bullets leaving serious damage.


Incident Nine:

At approximately 00:30 hours, Boston Police Officers from A-7 responded to a ShotSpotter activation for 6 rounds in the area of 180 Maverick Street in East Boston. Officers located numerous spent shell casings on scene, and Detectives were called in to process the scene. Incident is still under investigation.


Incident Ten:

At approximately 01:35 hours, Boston Police Officers from District A-1 responded to calls for shots fired Downtown in the China Town area of Lincoln Street. Officers responded and ballistics were located in the area. District Detectives were called to the scene and it was processed. At this time nothing further is available.


Incident eleven:

At approximately 01:40 hours, Boston Police Offices from Disticct C-11 responded to 911 calls for shots fired in the area of 67 Geneva Ave. Officers responded to the area. At this time no further information is available.


Incident Twelve:

At approximately 01:45 hours, Boston Police Officers from District B-3 responded to calls and a ShotSpotter Activation for shots fired at 12 Paxton Street in Mattapan. Officers responded and 9 spent casings were located in the area. District Detectives were called to the scene and it was processed. At this time nothing further is available.


Incident Thirteen:

At approximately 02:10 hours, Boston Police Officers from District B-3 responded to multiple ShotSpotter activations at the intersection of Millet Street and Wheatland Street in Dorchester for almost 30 rounds. Ballistics were recovered throughout the area. District Detectives were called to the scene and it was processed. At this time nothing further is available.


Incident Fourteen:

At approximately 02:25 Boston Police Officers from District B-3 responded to the area of 55 Evans Street in Mattapan for 5 rounds on the ShotSpotter Activation. On scene, officers located ballistic damage to a vehicle. Detectives were called to the scene and the incident is still under investigation.


Incident Fifteen:

At approximately 03:00 hours, Officers from District C-11 responded to the area of 41 Owencroft Road for reports of a home struck by gun fire. When Officers arrived on scene, they were shown damage consistent with bullets, and Detectives were called to the scene. At this time nothing further is avaible, and the incident is still under investigation.


Incident Sixteen:

At approximately 04:40 hours, Boston Police Officers from District B-3 responded to the area of 18 Astoria Street in Mattapan for 2 rounds on the ShotSpotter Activation. The incident is still under investigation.
