The officers quickly gained control of the weapon and placed the suspect in custody as the now unruly group from the park began to gather around them. The firearm was later determined to be a loaded .380 caliber Ruger handgun with a defaced serial number.

At about 12:32 AM on Sunday July 18, 2021, members of the BPD Youth Violence Strike Force arrested Elmer Rodriguez, 19, of Chelsea on firearm related charges following an investigation in the area of the American Park and Playground located at 25 Glendon Street in East Boston.
The officers were on patrol in the area when their attention was drawn to two individuals sitting on the concrete stands of the baseball field. Officers were aware of the City of Boston’s Park Rules which indicate that all public parks close at dusk unless otherwise noted. Upon approaching the two males, the officers observed that the suspect appeared to have a ‘fanny pack’ hanging across his chest and that upon seeing the officers approaching, he began to try and slide it towards his back. As the officers began speaking with the suspect, he quickly used his arm to pin the pack against his side. Believing that the suspect may be armed, officers performed a pat frisk and immediately detected the presence of the firearm. The suspect was placed in custody without incident at which time the officers recovered a loaded Taurus 38 Special revolver from inside the pack. Officers continued their investigation and determined that the suspect was wanted on two outstanding arrest warrants sought out of East Boston Court on charges of Larceny from the Person and Breaking and Entering. The second party on scene, a juvenile male, was transported home and released to a guardian at the conclusion of the investigation.
The suspect will appear in East Boston District Court on charges of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition and Carrying a Loaded Firearm.
