Yesterday morning Father John Unni, pastor of Saint Cecilia Parish located in the Back Bay, was appointed Chief Chaplain for the Boston Fire Department. A number of family members as well as Mayor Michelle Wu and BFD commander John Dempsey, gathered to congratulate this promotion at Florian Hall of Dorchester. Parishioner Bob Atchinson awarded him with his pin, which was said to be a very thrilling moment for Father John.
Over the course of Father John’s career, he has consistently shown commitment to the community through charitable involvement as well as issues of social justice. Since 2017, he has worked as the Assistant Fire Chaplain for the city of Boston, where he has made a significant impact on a number of lives. He has helped firefighters as well as their families through times of heightened stress and grief by providing emotional support and spiritual guidance.
This opportunity is considered a great honor, but is also one of deep meaning to Father John. He believes that a big purpose of his life is to help those whom are down and out, or are lost literally and spiritually. Father John strives to make a positive difference in people’s lives, which is why it is believed he is the right man for this job.
