Man Dies at Carney Hospital After Shooting Down the Street

At about 17:06 hours, on Wednesday, August 31, 2022, officers assigned to District C-11 responded to a 911 call reporting shots fired in the area of 7 Van Winkle Street in Dorchester. As officers responded, the caller updated that a silver sedan was fleeing the scene with a shot out front window.

Once on scene at Van Winkle, officers began canvasing for victims, witnesses and evidence. Residents in the area stated that they saw the sedan turn left down Dorchester Avenue and believed someone may have been shot inside of the car. Fearing for the worst, officers preempively responded to Carney Hospital, which is located less than half a mile down the road from where the shooting occured. Officers did locate ballistic evidence on Van Winkle and secured the scene while awaiting the arrival of investigators.

Shortly after arriving at the hospital, officers confirmed that a victim had self-presented at the emergency department with injuries consistent with a shooting. Doctors and nurses immediately began to treat the victim who had been shot at least once, and whose injuries were considered critical and life threatening. The adult male victim eventually succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Due to the serious nature of the incident, the supervisor on scene made full notifications. Homicide Detectives, Crime Scene Response Investigators, Command Staff members and the District Attourney’s Office were all alerted and began responding. Late into the night investigators could be seen processing the scene, including marking, photographing and collecting the numerous pieces of evidence.
