On Thursday, December 29th, 2022, at approximately 01:30 hours, Lexington Police officers, Lexington firefighters, responded to a 911 call reporting that a serious car accident occurred near 476 Bedford Street.

Units that first arrived noted that the accident occurred directly in front of the Boston Children’s at Lexington. The crash was a horrific sight. The white pickup truck had sustained major damages. The truck’s two front wheels came off and were laying in the street. Additionally, the vehicle had crashed into multiple telephone poles, completely destroying them and causing electric service in the area to be impacted.

The operator, who was initially reported to be trapped, was helped from the vehicle by first responding police officers, who reported that the engine compartment was on fire, and that the operator was clearly shaken. Police searched the vehicle and found a bottle of hard liquor and suspected the driver may have been operating under the influence of alcohol. He was taken into police custody, however due to the severity of the crash was transported to an area hospital for evaluation.

Mutual aid from Burlington, Bedford, and Lincoln also responded to assist Lexington Police. Since the damage from the crash was extensive, mutual aid officers closed off much of Bedford Street so utility companies could fix the damaged poles.

Once police had finished with their investigation, the truck was towed away from the scene. The driver involved was charged with operating under the influence, but it is unknown if he will face additional charges.
