At approximately 11:32 hours this morning, January 29, Boston EMTs and Boston Police officers assigned to District B-3 responded to a Shotspotter activation near 119 Babson Street and Fremont Street. Immediately after, numerous 911 calls reported that a person was shot and injured in the same location.

As Police began making their way to the scene, they also decided to block off Norfolk and Fremont Streets in order to slow the possible suspect and redirect traffic. Police received reports that the suspect, described as a 5-foot 7-inch black male, was seen getting out of a black Infiniti SUV and fleeing on foot down Fremont Street. Additionally, some reports suggested that he entered 230 Fremont Street. Police immediately began searching the area.

Boston EMTs swiftly arrived at the scene to locate the victim. Once they found him, they quickly began treating his severe and life-threatening wounds. Although EMTs attempted to stabilize the victim, he tragically succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene. His identity has not yet been released to the public, but the District Attorney’s office confirmed that he was a teenager.

“Unfortunately we’re here after another tragic incident,” said a District Attorney’s Kevin Hayden. “Our hearts go out to our communities and everyone that’s affected.”

Due to the serious nature of the situation, the police supervisor on the scene made full notifications. Homicide Detectives, the K-9 Unit, and Command Staff were all seen responding to the scene and assisting with the investigation. Investigators were able to locate a numerous spent ballistic shell casings, but evidence on the scene was otherwise scarce besides the body which remained covered with a yellow tarp.

Other units from B-3 continued their search for the suspect. In addition to the description they already had, they were also made aware that the suspect was possibly wearing a Canada Goose jacket. To make their search more focused, they mainly honed in on searching the area of Fremont Street where the suspect was last seen. After an extended search and chase, Police could not locate the suspect. No arrests have been made at this time.

“This is a part of the city with an incredibly strong community: so many residents who come together to plan and make sure that everyone’s on the same page. Today, on a morning when so many families were at church or just enjoying the quiet Sunday morning, it’s incredibly painful to have this take place,” said Boston Mayor Michelle Wu.
