On Saturday, January 28, 2023, shortly before 14:30 hours, Boston Fire Alarm struck Box 7447, E 5th Street and P Street for 141 P Street in South Boston, District 6. As companies responded to the Box, Fire Alarm updated that the caller reported that the siding of the building appeared to be ablaze.
When Engine 2 arrived at the Box, they reported light smoke showing from the second floor and immediately got to work going into fast attack mode. As the fire progressed, crews attempted to stop its spread as it climbed the walls of the building but eventually, a Second Alarm was ordered.
The fire was in the residences above Jimmy’s Konvenient Store, a well-known staple of the neighborhood. Firefighters updated Command that they had located pockets of fire inside the third floor as well. Luckily, firefighters were able to clear the buildings and the search for victims was negative on all floors.
Eventually, firefighters were able to get a handle on the blaze, but not before it was able to reach the roof. Images show flames bursting through the roof as firefighters blasted the blaze with water. Finally, the fire was knocked down, and thankfully freighters were able to contain it to just the original building, stopping its spread to the neighboring houses.
Deputy Chief Martin McCormack did confirm to reporters on the scene that one firefighter was treated for minor injuries but thankfully is expected to make a full recovery.
A total of four residents were displaced and damages are estimated to be over $500,000. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by Boston Fire and Poice’s FIU, no further information is available.
